2017 is ushering in a new year for Indian Fashion! After Anjali Lama became the first Transgender model to walk Lakme Fashion Week, the world of Indian fashion has started to progress.
Take a look at our list of the top 5 Indian fashion designers to watch in 2017!
Graduating from Mumbai’s SNDT Women’s University in 2009 with a degree in Apparel Manufacture and Design, she launched her self-titled label Masaba in the same year!
She made her debut at Lakme Fashion Week’s Gen Next show with a selection of her signature style – traditional Indian aesthetics and modern flair typified by lightweight fabrics.
Her designs have been worn by big Hollywood names like Bipasha Basu and Shilpa Shetty, and in 2012 she won the L’Oreal Femina Award for Best Emerging Designer, alongside PETA India’s Most Talented Designer 2013.
This fashion line has been running for 48 years, so you know you’ll be getting someone with incredible industry experience. Ritu Kumar has grown her label from the outskirts of Kolkata to one of India’s biggest brands, boasting 27 stores dotted across the country.
Her designs are made from fine Indian fabrics and in the hands of the country’s most talented craftspeople, with the idea of re-defining traditional Indian clothing in the contemporary era. This makes her clothes rich in India aesthetics and modern sophistication.
Her achievements have been rewarded several times, including the Padmi Shri Award for her contributions to fashion, textiles and craftsmanship, as well as the prestigious french award Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.
She’s not only the daughter of Dinesh Singhal, and the granddaughter of Indian artist J.P.Singhal, she’s also a renowned designer!
After winning Shoppers Stop Designer of the Year Award at 15, she started her journey to creating her self-titled label. Launched in 1999, she now creates made-to-order designs alongside ready-to-wear bridal, contemporary and occasion design.
Her style is closely linked to confident, cultured and South Asian, and her brand is worldwide! While her flagship shop is based in Mumbai, she has retail outlets in Hong Kong, the Middle East, India and the USA.
Relatively young in the fashion world compared to the rest of our list. Kanika didn’t launch her own label until 2014, but she worked for high end labels including Marchesa, Bibu Mohapatra and Prada!
Her style is described by many as “provocative minimalism”, and she dresses not just women but men as well. Her style is based on a mixture of classic luxury and urban chic, further mixed with paradoxical textiles and shapes.
She’s definitely one to watch, after making her Lakme Fashion Show debut in 2015 and winning the designer of the year within the show for her “Creatures of the Night” collection.
Priyanka Ella Lorena Lama
Described as one of India’s most talented and up-and-coming young fashion designers, Priyanka Ella Lorena Lama is definitely one to watch!
Her debut collection was launched via Pret-a-Porter under the label P.E.L.L.A during the Lakme Fashion Week Gen Next show in 2015.
Her debut collection titled Utopia, references that there is beauty in imperfection, so she focuses on natural fabrics like silk, natural silhouettes and hand-crafted aesthetics.
