The modelling world is becoming more diverse and inclusive year on year. It is certainly reassuring to see and means those of an ethnic background are finding opportunities of more prominence. British Asian models have been growing in stature in recent times and here are Rolla Bazaar’s top 5 to look out for this year…
She has modelled for Abercrombie & Fitch. Burberry and the infamous Kanye West; Neelam Gill is undoubtedly the first British Indian to break into the modelling A-list.
She made her debut on the Catwalk for Burberry at London Fashion Week 2014 and became the first Indian model to be featured in one of the company’s campaigns.
In November 2015, she became the face of Abercrombie & Fitch, modelled for Dior and Yeezy and can be sen wearing a Saree in a British Airways advert set in Heathrow Airport.
This year Coventry-born Gill has featured in L’Oréal’s new self-worth campaign. We can’t wait to see what other projects she undertakes this year!
Bishamber Das is the UK’s first Asian plus sized model and has had a tremendous career thus far.
Back in 2014, she became the first ever plus sized model to win a title at the International Miss India Europe competition; an even more impressive accolade as she was the only plus sized contestant.
She has since modelled for leading plus sized brands including: yours clothing, elvi, simply be, Gemma Collins, figure 8, Eyahni couture, voodoo vixen. She is a regular on the BBC Asian Network, has appeared on numerous TV shows and now has international recognition in the fashion industry.
In 2017, Bishamber can be seen in eBay’s #curve campaign and we can’t wait to see what else she gets up to!
In 2005, Hammasa was crowned Mss England and became the first ever Muslim contestant to do so in the process.
Soon after the pageant, Hammassa featured in Teen Vogue magazine in 2006 and appeared in the front cover of Zeba magazine.
This year Hammasa has modelled for Just Hype and we expect even more great things for the remaining three quarters of 2017!
Fun fact – Hammasa’s stock photo on Getty Images was used as the basis for the face of the extraterrestrial character Tali’Zorah from the Mass Effect series of video games.
After being crowned Mr Asia in 2004, the former investment banker made quite the change in career paths.
He has been a ramp model at London Fashion Week, Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week and Lakme India Fashion Week. He’s also been a brand ambassador for Option and Boy London and has modelled for Matrix Hair Model Fashion Show, Indian Contemporary & Classic Couture, Roberto Cavalli and Kiran Gidwani.
Most recently, he directed and starred in 7 Welcome to London; the most successful British hindi film of all time.
